Delta-8 THC: What’s All the Buzz About?
Thanks to a recent article by The New York Times, Delta-8 has finally hit the mainstream. Once an elusive oddity, delta-8 is now the hottest item on the hemp market, including Knoxville. Cannabis laws in states like Tennessee, that only regulate the delta-9 in cannabis, have propelled industry innovation and delta-8 is the current leader of the pack.
The fresh buzz has many asking, “What is delta-8 THC?” Both delta-8 and delta-9 occur naturally in the cannabis plant. And, chemically speaking, delta 8 and delta 9 have the same chemical structure. However, the double bond that occurs on the 9th carbon chain in D9 occurs on the 8th carbon chain in D8. This slight difference allows each variation to exist separately.
Although limited, there are published studies regarding the effects of delta-8 THC. One 1974 study found that “mice treated for 20 consecutive days with delta 8-THC and CBN had reduced primary tumor size.” Further research was conducted in 1995 involving pediatric cancer patients. This study also showed positive results. Otherwise, delta-8 has been largely absent from the cannabis scene until now.
A recent letter issued by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture confirms use of hemp-derived products in edible goods. TDA also confirmed its permit is valid for intrastate commerce. With this news, consumers in Knoxville, Tennessee, and beyond are free to legally purchase and enjoy hemp-derived delta-8.
